1. What a Certificate of Analysis actually is
A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is a laboratory report generated for one specific manufacturing lot of a chemical material. It documents what an independent testing laboratory measured, using what method, on what date — nothing more. For research peptides, a CoA typically reports two things: identity (is this the compound it claims to be?) and purity (how much of the sample is that compound, versus impurities or byproducts?).
A CoA is a lot-specific document. It applies only to the batch it was issued for. A supplier's marketing claim that a "product" is 99% pure is meaningless without a CoA tied to the specific lot you are receiving — purity can and does vary between production runs.
2. How to read a CoA, section by section
Most legitimate peptide CoAs contain the same core sections. Here's what each one tells you:

3. HPLC purity, explained
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) works by pushing a dissolved sample through a column that separates its components based on chemical properties. Each component exits the column at a different time and is detected as a "peak." The area under each peak is proportional to how much of that component is present.
"Purity by HPLC" is a percent-area measurement — the area of the target compound's peak divided by the total area of all detected peaks. This is a widely accepted and useful measure, but it is a relative one: it tells you the proportion of the detected signal that matches your compound of interest, not an absolute mass-based purity figure, and it will not detect anything the method wasn't calibrated to see.
A 99% HPLC purity result means 99% of the detected chromatographic signal corresponds to the target compound under the stated method. It is not equivalent to a pharmaceutical-grade purity assay, and it carries no implication about sterility, endotoxin levels, or suitability for any use beyond in-vitro laboratory research.
4. Mass spectrometry identity confirmation
Mass spectrometry (MS) measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ionized molecules in a sample, which allows a lab to confirm the molecular weight of the material against the expected value for the target compound. This is the identity check — it answers "is this the right molecule?" — as distinct from HPLC, which answers "how much of it is present, relative to everything else detected?" A rigorous CoA reports both.
5. Why lot traceability matters
Because purity and identity results apply only to the lot tested, a CoA is only meaningful if it's traceable to the physical material in front of you. A lot number on the CoA that matches the lot number on the vial label is the mechanism that makes the paperwork mean anything. Buyers evaluating a supplier should ask whether every individual lot is tested, or whether a single CoA is being reused across multiple production runs — the latter is a common shortcut among less rigorous suppliers.
6. What a CoA does not tell you
It's worth being explicit about the limits of this documentation, since it's easy to over-read a CoA:
- A CoA does not certify sterility, endotoxin levels, or pyrogen status.
- A CoA does not indicate the material was produced under pharmaceutical current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) conditions.
- A CoA is not a safety, efficacy, or fitness-for-purpose determination of any kind.
- A CoA does not constitute regulatory approval or evaluation by the FDA or any other body.
- A CoA says nothing about appropriate handling, storage stability over time, or suitability for any specific laboratory application — that determination is the responsibility of the qualified researcher using the material.
7. What "Research Use Only" actually means
"Research Use Only" (RUO) is a labeling designation indicating that a material is supplied strictly for laboratory research and has not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for use in or on humans or animals. It is a meaningful, specific classification — not a loophole or a marketing phrase.
Concretely, RUO means:
- The material is not a drug, dietary supplement, food, cosmetic, or medical device under applicable law.
- It has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, efficacy, or any therapeutic claim.
- It is not manufactured under pharmaceutical cGMP conditions, and is not certified sterile or pyrogen-free.
- It is not intended, labeled, or sold for administration to a human being or an animal, by any route, for any purpose.
Buyers should treat an RUO designation as a hard boundary, not a formality. A supplier that provides dosing guidance, application protocols, or human-use framing alongside an RUO label is signaling a gap between its paperwork and its actual conduct — a useful thing to notice when evaluating any source.

8. A short checklist for evaluating any supplier's CoA
- Is the CoA issued by a named, independent third-party laboratory — not the manufacturer or seller itself?
- Does the lot number on the CoA match the lot number on the vial you received?
- Does the report include both identity confirmation (MS) and purity (HPLC), with a stated method?
- Is the test date reasonably close to the material's production or your order date?
- Does the supplier make claims — dosing, benefits, results — that go beyond what the CoA and RUO labeling actually support?
