How Institutional Buyers Evaluate Peptide Reference Materials
Laboratories, universities, and contract research organizations apply a fairly consistent checklist when qualifying a new supplier of peptide reference materials, regardless of which vendor they end up choosing. This guide walks through what that evaluation typically covers, independent of any specific brand, so a buyer can apply it to any supplier they are considering — including us.
1. Lot-specific analytical documentation
The first check is whether documentation is tied to the specific lot being purchased, not a generic specification sheet for the compound in general. A Certificate of Analysis should show the actual measured purity and identity result for that production run, with a lot or report number that can be cross-referenced. 2. Testing method and scope
Buyers typically want to know exactly which analytical methods were used — usually reversed-phase HPLC for purity and mass spectrometry for identity confirmation — and what was not tested. A supplier that states its testing scope precisely, including gaps such as sterility or endotoxin testing not being part of the panel, is easier to qualify than one that makes a blanket "fully tested" claim. 3. Independent testing vs. manufacturer QC
There is a meaningful difference between a Certificate of Analysis issued by an independent third-party laboratory and a manufacturer's own internal QC document. Both can be legitimate, but they are not interchangeable, and a supplier should label which one applies to a given lot rather than describing all documentation as independent when it is not.
4. Lot traceability
A buyer should be able to trace the vial they received back to its specific Certificate of Analysis via the lot number printed on the label. 5. Buyer verification and research-use policy
A supplier that verifies buyers before shipping — confirming research affiliation and requiring a signed research-use acknowledgment — signals that it takes its own compliance obligations seriously. This is also a practical safeguard for the institution: procurement records that show a documented account-verification step are easier to defend in an internal audit.
6. Ongoing documentation support
Reordering the same material should not require re-litigating documentation each time. Buyers generally look for a stable archive of past CoAs, a consistent point of contact for documentation requests, and a supplier that will not go silent once the order has shipped.
