What Does “Research Use Only” Mean?

“Research use only” (RUO) is a specific, defined category, not a generic disclaimer. This page explains what it means in practice, since it's one of the most common questions we receive before an account is opened. All materials supplied by BNM Research Peptides are for laboratory research use only — not for human or veterinary use.

1. The core definition

A material labeled for research use only is sold as a chemical reagent for laboratory investigation — typically in-vitro (outside a living organism) study — and has not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for use in humans or animals. It is not a drug, dietary supplement, food, cosmetic, or medical device, and no claim is made that it is safe or effective for any purpose outside controlled laboratory research.

2. Why this label exists

Peptide compounds sold as RUO reference materials are typically synthesized for structural, comparative, or mechanistic research — supporting work like receptor-binding assays, analytical method development, or academic study. They are not manufactured under pharmaceutical current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) conditions, and standard RUO testing (purity and identity) does not establish sterility, endotoxin limits, or pyrogenicity — properties that would be required before any material could be considered for administration to a human or animal.

3. Who RUO materials are sold to

Legitimate RUO suppliers sell to laboratories, academic institutions, and businesses engaged in research — not to individual consumers purchasing for personal use. A supplier that verifies buyer affiliation and requires a signed research-use acknowledgment is applying the restriction as an operating condition of sale, not a passive legal notice. 4. What RUO does not mean

RUO does not mean the material has been tested for human safety and is simply labeled cautiously for legal reasons. It means the testing performed (typically purity and identity) does not extend to what would be required for human or animal use, and the material has not undergone that further evaluation. A supplier providing dosing, administration, or “how to use” information alongside an RUO label is not applying the restriction in practice, regardless of what the label states.
